Areola Incisions

Areola incisions are alternatively known as peri-areolar/ nipple incisions. We are discussing about an incision that is used widely today. Areola incision is used for every implant made in your body. These are muscle implants and sub-muscular implants – total and partial. Such incisions are useful even for removing breast implants. In addition, two other different types of incisions are in vogue and these are TUBA (Transumbilical Breast Augmentation) and trans-axillary incisions. The areola incisions are advantageous because it facilitates the surgeon to do the surgery at close quarters whereas it is not practicable in other categories of incisions referred above.

Areola is the darker area around your nipple; but areola incision is carried out outside the actual area of the areola. If the incision is done exactly at the outside border of areola you might find that the scar due to incision is invisible. The light and dark breast tissues connect at this border. The incision is not carried out in the darker area of the areola because the white scar is easily noticeable against a dark background. The outcome will be very unattractive and hence to be avoided at any cost. If you use areola incisions at the proper location you will get near perfect healing in most of the cases. This ensures that the chances of having a visible scar are low. At times you will find that the scar does not heal fully. Under these circumstances the surgeon uses a surgical tape to reduce the tension on the skin. This stops any stretching at the scar area thereby ensuring faster healing. Once the wound heals you might see a thin line which is hardly noticeable. In order to get better results you can get further scar treatments.

If you are looking for a breast implant that has not been filled earlier it is essential for you to talk to your doctor on this. You must check with him regarding the utilization of protective sleeves by the surgeon at the time of inserting the implant through the areola incision. This is essential because of the fact that wearing protective sleeves will prevent the infection of the implant. Otherwise there is a possibility that the bacteria entering the implant area thereby causing germ contamination.

In most of the situations areola incisions are linked to breast lift surgery or mastopexy. All breast lifts require nipple incision performed by the surgeon. There is no valid reason for any surgeon to adopt a different type of incision other than nipple incision for breast lift. Any other type of incision will scar the area unnecessarily and hence there is no point in doing it.

You must be happy to know that most of the women who got their breast lifts/ implants done by using areola incisions have got full satisfaction. There are hardly any cases wherein the surgery ends up with visible as well as ugly scars. Such scars occur at times due to the reason that the surgeon who performs the cosmetic surgery does not possess the requisite skills. In order to avoid this problem you must ensure that the plastic surgeon that does the areola incision has the requisite experience in this field. You should not be reluctant to talk about this with your surgeon. The cosmetic surgery you are contemplating to get done makes drastic changes in the way your body looks and hence it is necessary that this is performed only by an experienced professional. Your interest is to ensure that you look better and do not have scars.
