Gastric Bypass
Gastric Bypass is a cosmetic surgery procedure wherein your
stomach is made smaller. The objective of this procedure is to
ensure that the food you take bypasses a part of your small
intestine. As a result of this you tend to eat less food.
This means that you start feeling full even if you eat smaller
quantities of food than when your stomach was of original size.
The calories intake will get reduced considerably due to this
and most of the people undergoing this surgery lose weight
within a period of a few months.
The food you eat after digestion goes through your stomach
and enters the small intestine thereafter. Most of the calories
and nutrients are absorbed in small intestine. The food
remaining will go to large intestine or colon and the waste
gets excreted from here. The gastric bypass procedure used
nowadays is known as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. This bypass
makes your stomach smaller by creating one small pouch and this
pouch is positioned at the stomach’s upper area. This means
that your stomach becomes very much smaller than the original
and this will be connected to jejunum or small intestine. This
whole procedure is meant to bypass the rest of your stomach as
well as the duodenum or the top of small intestine.
Before you go for gastric bypass surgery you must understand
certain things. To start with you must realize that you have to
be hospitalized for a period of 4 to 6 days. Further you can go
for your regular work only after a period of one month.
Immediately after your gastric surgery you might be affected by
dumping syndrome. This occurs when the food moves too fast
inside your body. This results in weakness, faintness, nausea,
sweating, diarrhea etc. You might get these symptoms after
eating; this becomes worse when you eat high calorie foods or
sweets. It is advisable that you discuss with your doctor about
this syndrome and this will educate you on what you can expect
and how to manage it.
The doctors recommend gastric bypass as a solution to treat
your problems only if your BMI is more than 40. They might
consider this as a necessity in case you are affected by a
condition that could cause disability which is linked to
weight. You must realize that you should go for gastric bypass
only if you fail to reduce your weight either with dieting or
any other treatments. The doctor will undertake the surgery
only if you had obesity problems for a period of 5 years, you
do not have drinking problems and you are at least 18 years
old.
It has been found that most of the people undergoing gastric
bypass surgery will shed weight within a period of one year. A
number of studies have revealed that most of these patients are
in a position to reduce their excess weight by 1/3 in a maximum
period of 4 years. There are numerous benefits that you will
get after this surgery and also it will make you feel much
better. You must realize that many diseases and complications
occur because of obesity. In this surgery you are going to
remove that part of intestine which is responsible for
absorbing most of the vitamins and minerals. Some of the
patients might have been already suffering from lack of
calcium, magnesium, iron or other vitamins. Gastric bypass
might further increase this deficiency that might cause more
problems and hence you must consult your dietician or
nutritionist on this issue. It might be necessary for you to
take additional supplements to improve your nutrition. There
could be other complications that might occur due to this
surgery and hence it is advisable for you to discuss in detail
about the surgery and also its side effects. Make sure that
this is the right solution before you venture into it. This
might also change your lifestyle and make you remain happy and
healthy.
